HOMECOMING FOR NEW TAMWORTH JOCKEY CLUB GENERAL MANAGER JACK PENFOLD

The Board of Tamworth Jockey Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Jack Penfold to the position of General Manager commencing 21 February 2023.

Mr Penfold was selected following an extensive interview process which saw a large number of applicants submit their interest for the position. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer at Manning Valley Race Club (Taree).

A product of Tamworth High School, Penfold’s introduction to the racing industry began as a part-time Steward under the tutelage of former Hunter & North-West Racing Association Chief Steward Shane Cullen.

Opportunities to further develop his skill set saw Penfold move to Sydney where he served a two-year cadetship with Racing NSW Stewards, before returning to Tamworth as Deputy Steward under Cullen.

In 2018, Penfold was appointed Chief Steward for the Mid North Coast Racing Association and was based out of the Port Macquarie office, gaining invaluable experience, before an opportunity came up to take the reins of Manning Valley Race in 2022.

TJC President, Keith Harris said “The Board are pleased to appoint Jack Penfold to the position of General Manager and we look forward to his start in late February.”

“Jack will join with a wealth of racing industry knowledge, and the fact he was born and raised in Tamworth, means he has existing relationships with locals and racing participants that he can further build on.”

Mr Penfold said “My family and I are very excited on returning to Tamworth. It’s a great opportunity to be part of a successful team and build on the Club’s recent successes. I’m looking forward to the new challenge.”

Michael Buckley announced his resignation as General Manager in December last year and vacates the role following Saturday’s Ladies Day race meeting at Tamworth.

“We thank Michael for his efforts over the past two years. The Board wish him all best at Racing NSW Country. It is a real plus to have Michael in Druitt Street (Racing NSW Head Office) continuing to oversee the Club and ensure we put our best foot forward,” Harris said.

Racing NSW confirm appointment of two Independent TJC directors

Racing NSW has confirmed the appointments of two Independent Directors to the Tamworth Jockey Club Board after considering applications from seven candidates for the four vacant positions.

The successful applicants were Mr Tim Coates, a former President of the Tamworth Jockey Club and a well-known local businessman, and Ms Stephanie Cameron, a director and operations Manager at East West EnviroAg Pty Ltd, who is the current President of the Tamworth Business Chamber of Commerce.

Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding AO in confirming the two appointments said Mr Coates impressed the selection panel not only with his extensive racing background, his business knowledge and corporate governance experience, but also his commitment to seeing the Club succeed into the future.

“His involvement as a longstanding member of the Tamworth community and many connections in business and in council will be invaluable to the TJC,” he added.

Mr Balding said Ms Cameron has the appropriate experience in the way of her current and previous roles on executive committees and in the boardroom to also add value to the Board.

A Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Certified Internal Auditor, Ms Cameron has had considerable experience as a Chairperson, Treasurer and Company Secretary with a number of community and larger organisations, including being an executive committee member of the Australasian Soil and Plant Analysis Council, a board member of the National Landcare Network and Chair of Landcare NSW.

The two Racing NSW appointed independent directors will join the Board of the Tamworth Jockey Club (TJC) which currently comprises the following six newly elected members who were elected to the TJC Board on 8 September 2021 for a two-year term: Mr James Carolan; Mr Daniel Daly; Mr Keith Harris; Mr Joe Howard; Mr Mitch Jones; and Mr Ray Nicholson.

The TJC directors will now meet with the Club’s Administrator David Jewell and elect their chairman, at which time the Administrator will step down and control of the Club will revert to the new Board.

Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding advised that while there was the capacity to appoint up to four independent directors, Racing NSW had recommended that after an appropriate time in the next six months the two remaining independent director positions should be re-advertised with the objective of complimenting the skillset of the new Board to ensure that there is the right mix of skills and knowledge there. Six new Member elected directors were confirmed at the Tamworth Jockey Club’s Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday 8 September 2021.

The new directors are (left to right from the top) – MITCH JONES, a recruitment consultant, who was a founding member of the successful ATC Young Members Advisory Council; KEITH HARRIS, an experienced company director, who has had more than 100 race winners; JAMES CAROLAN, the owner of Tamworth based Concrete Industry Supplies; JOE HOWARD, a solicitor with LBK specialising in commercial, property and employment law; DANIEL DALY, a director of Carpet One Tamworth, who describes himself as an avid supporter of the local racing industry; RAY NICHOLSON, the manager of Tamworth Tilt Trays, who like Daniel describes himself as racing fanatic.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions the TJC AGM was held remotely utilising Zoom video conferencing technology. The AGM was chaired by the administrator David Jewell and 23 members and visitors participated in the meeting.

The Chairman confirmed that the Club had reported a $496k surplus for the year, noting that the result included $467k of grant funding. Mr Jewell advised members that in his view the $29k operating profit, after providing for $122k of depreciation, was a satisfactory result for the financial year to 30 June 2021 under the circumstances.

The Chairman updated members on the construction programme to complete the new $1.56m sand training track and confirmed that the new Board will be looking at development plans later this year to upgrade and construct new stabling oncourse and further improvements to the Club’s training facilities which is being funded by a $2.4m Government grant.

Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding is heading up a selection panel that will review and make recommendations as to the independent directors that will join the newly elected member directors on the TJC Board.

It is expected that this process will be finalised in the coming weeks.
